We recommend keeping some spare paint around after the home has been repainted. Inevitably the walls of any home will suffer some stains, or dents. The spare paint can be used to repair wall damage, often with minimal effort.
But if we keep spare paint we will need to find a safe storage area. And we will need to be aware that no paint lasts forever.
Paint is best left in a sealed container, and stored in an outdoor shed, or perhaps in the garage. Do not keep it in an enclosed space as any paint fumes can be toxic, especially over long periods of time.

If possible try to put the leftover paint in a small sealable glass or plastic container. The less air in the container the better. This will help prevent the paint from setting.
Sometimes the paint will separate, with liquid at the top and the solid material at the base. This does not necessarily mean that it has gone bad. Often it can be restored with some thorough stirring. The hardware store where the paint was purchased may have a machine that can do this automatically.

Different Paint Types have different expected Lifespans
– Latex or Acrylic-Latex Paint – 2 to 10 years
– Oil-Based Paint – 2 to 15 years
– Chalk Paint – 1 to 5 years
– Milk Paint – 1 to 7 days

Alternatives to Leftover Paint

Many paint and hardware stores have the technology to scan a painted surface and reproduce a paint of the matching colour. So if we paint a small piece of wood with the paint we can always have it reproduced. This is best used with larger amounts of paint.
It is also possible to have a sample pot of paint produced in the same colours when we originally buy the paint. This can be used for touch-up repairs. The only issue it that no two post of paint are exactly identical, so the repair paint might be a slightly different shade.
